Last March of 2008 I was so excited to get my new Samsung LN-T4065F 40 inch LCD TV. The looks of the LCD set is awesome, watching it on High Def is just amazing. But it only took 1 year and 3 months for it to go bad(Yeah after my warranty expired. What a bummer!). The initial problem was when you turn on the device it takes awhile for it to come on. At first, I thought it was my Direct TV DVR that was causing the power up delay because every time when it come on the resolution of my TV goes from 1080i to 480i. But after few weeks the LCD TV gets worst, clicking starts to come in and TV turns on with this weird colored background and I just got tired of it and started searching about it over the internet. After that time, I am for sure of the problem and there’s an abundant of information about it over the internet.
Read about: Symptoms of an LCD Power Supply Problem

Swollen, Bulged, Bad Capacitor
The main cause of this power up problem are bad capacitors on your power supply. The image to your left shows that the middle capacitor is bulged or swollen and that’s how you can identify if the capacitor is bad. See more bad capacitor images Most of the post I have read online haven’t shown a capacitor that has leaked, but obviously that would be another indicator for a bad capacitor.
Now, if your LCD set is still under warranty I would suggest to use it and let the professionals handle the problem for you. But for the rest of the Samsung LCD TV owners that their warranty had expired and want to save some money, this would be the best route. Mind me, when I fixed my power supply I didn’t have any previous experience on desoldering and soldering capacitors on a power supply board. It was a good experience after all is said and done.
Here’s what you need for this DIY project: Screw driver, Soldering iron(40watts+), Desoldering braid, Soldering wire, and capacitors.
Now lets talk about the specs, capacitors hold 3 important value:
1. The capacitance measured in uF(micro farads) (ex. 2200uF), 2. Voltage (ex. 10v), 3. Temperature (ex. 105°C)
Important Notes:
Samsung’s power supply capacitors has 10v installed on the board and it is attached to a 12v bus which is causing to bulged. (I’m not a Electrical Engineer but I do know if you put too much on something, its going to get bigger or burst! ^_^ And that’s why our LCD sets end up with bulged or leaked capacitors)
Look at the bad capacitor and get the right information from it, remember uF, voltage and temperature. Mine, I only change 2 capacitors. It needed two 2200 uF, when I first saw my power supply it was really easy to spot the bad caps. Some Samsung LCD owners did went ahead replace all the capacitors on the power supply to make sure. Now if you’re like me, an inexperience solder, I would not recommend changing all the capacitors because to me it was time consuming for a noob(newbie) like me ^_^.
Few things to take note, always make sure you have the right polarity. Negative part is where the colored stripe on the capacitor. If your looking at the image above, it would be the copper colored stripe. And if you are looking at the two connector wire of the capacitor, the negative wire is the short one. On placing it on the board make sure negative to negative and positive to positive. By this time you will be ready for soldering.
How to Solder and Desolder (Youtube video) is pretty simple and it just need guts to do it
The total cost for this project is $40 (I had to buy a new soldering iron and desoldering braid) You can buy capacitors from radioshack but always remember uF, voltage and temperature(they are price from .40 cents to $5 each).

Bought the Samsung LN-T4042H LCD from Best Buy @ September, 2008. It started the clicking and slow-to-power-up cycling a few weeks ago. I am eager to try replacing the capacitors myself after reading all the posts! I thought that Samsung made reliable electronics. My mom bought a Samsung LCD on my recommendation and I’m wondering when her tv will start having problems.
guys i had the same problem and here in hondras where i live, i couldnt find 220uf 10v so i got on the phone with an engineer and he told me to use the 25v capacitor i did it myself and the problem was solved right i spend i average 15 dollars thanx chris for this great post
to whoever wrote this article, you just saved me from buying a whole new HDTV. bought the proper capacitors, desoldered the bad ones, soldered on the ones, and it works! thanks so much.
@Anon, Thanks! When this problem happened to my LCD set I figured out if I post this on my blog it would help. I just didn’t realized that this problem was not just limited to the unlucky few.
I hope that the next time we buy an LCD set, we won’t encounter this problem any more!

SO, should I get a capacitor with more voltage (e.g., 12v if its only 10v??
@pabs
That’s right Pabs, get a 12v instead. On my set, I actually installed 10v capacitors so there’s a probability that my caps would give in later on, just like the old once. But it’s also possible that the OEM caps Samsung installed had bad quality. We will see if my caps will give in after a year. At least this time I don’t have to research on how to fix it
Hi,
I bought my Samsung 40″ LNS4095DX in February of 2007. It has been clicking for awhile but would usually come on after 10-20 seconds or so. Yesterday the whole screen developed vertical lines similar to what your photo shows, although I can still see the picture through the lines somewhat. Do you think swapping the capacitors might solve the problem? Understanding the inherent risks, disclaimer, legal stuff, etc…
I am extremely disappointed that this TV is now unwatchable and I am not in a situation right now where I can buy a new one or spend hundreds of dollars getting it fixed.
Sounds like a similar problem to the one I have on my Samsung LE40M87BDX. Any recommendations as to where I could get the capacitors from? (P.S. I live in Surrey about a mile from Samsung’s UK HQ, if this doesn’t work I’ll be camping on their doorstep!!!).
@BruceB – Open the back of your LCD set, if the capacitors are bad, then, yes changing the caps should fix the problem. If Samsung is not extending your warranty(which happened to some) then your best option would be to fix the know capacitor problem.
@Jay – try http://www.parts-express.com/ I haven’t bought anything from them but one of our readers mentioned this website. Just try it and let us know. Good luck!
Here’s a little update. I took apart the TV and it was the usual suspects, CM852 and CM853 were both blown. Ordered these caps:
http://cgi.ebay.ca/5-pcs-Electrolytic-Capacitors-2200uF-16V-105C_W0QQitemZ290384903637QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_210?hash=item439c49fdd5
I should be receiving them any day now then I’ll post another update after I put them in. I’ve been taking pics along the way just so I don’t forget anything when I put it back together. I might upload them if anyone needs help with the 4669F.
I have a LN46A650 had 2 bad caps. They were 1000uF 25V and showed bulging and leakage replaced them and the TV works fine now thanks for the info.
Just a note on electrolytic capacitors… even if it looks fine a capacitor can still be bad. It’s hard to definitively test if a cap is good so replace when in doubt. Give yourself some margin in the voltage rating, no harm using a higher voltage as long as it’s the same type of capacitor and it physically fits where it needs to go (higher voltage tend to be bigger). So if a 10 V cap gave out on a 12 V circuit, go 16 or 25 V.
For real fun stories of replacing capacitors do a search for antique radio rebuilder forums…
had my sumsung 40 in. for two years and now will not even come on for about an hour. Just gives me a clicking sound when I try to power it up. Does anyone know how to fix the problem?
@Fray – The post is actually about on how to fix your Samsung TV with power up problems. Just read the post above and follow the instructions.
Joined class action lawsuit this morning to recover cost of having capacitors replaced on my Sammy LCD TV:
http://www.lieffcabraser.com/contact/contact-samsung-lcd.htm
We have a LNT4061F 40″ Samsung TV bought in Dec. 2007 and used only 14 months before we started having problems with it powering up. I did all the research on this problem and found this site most helpful. We chose to replace the complete “Power Supply Board” from samsungparts dot com for only $117.00. The power supply board was updated with bigger capacitors than the old one and only took 15 minutes to install after removing the defective on. If your not sure about soldering new capacitors onto the old board, I would suggest replacing it. After finding out that a repair place would charge around $600. we knew we could fix our TV ourselves, thanks to this site and everyones input.
@Chriss
We have another 40″ Samsung LCD TV model number to add to your list LN40A550. My parents have this TV and after tell them about our problem with our 40″ Samsung #LNT4061F and replacing the Power Supply Board(IP Board/Power PCB) because of the powering up problem, they said, “their TV was starting to do the same thing”. They bought this TV in July 2008 and it’s looking like they will need to replace the capacitors soon.
I will include the website for ordering the power supply board and the phone number – http://www.samsungparts.com or call 1-800-627-4368.

Looks like a few people are having this problem and an excellent instruction guide to fix – many thanks. My LCD is also not powering on any more with the on button at the front – thanks kids. Anyone else had this problem?
Hi, I ahve an LE32R74BD 32″ Samsung which failed on me just over 12 months ago, it was two years old at the time. I kept hold of the TV and thankfully have found the forums about the bad capacitor issue on some Samsung TVs. The failure on my set was simply that t didnt turn on and the red light was flashing on the front.
I have read numerous artcles and seen you tube vids about replacing capacitors and am confident about doing it as a novice. The problem I have is that none of the capacitors on my board are bulging or have leaked, e.g. there is no clear indication which ones, if any, have failed. One capacitors has a blue smudge across the top, probably off a wire that was close – could this be enough to make a capacitor fail?
Any ideas how else I can identify which capacitor, or other components have failed?
Thanks
Final Update: I successfully replaced the two bad caps in my LNT4669F. They were CM852 and CM853, both were 2200uf 10v 105C and I replaced them with 2200uf 16v 105C and it works good as new! I wouldn’t reccomend ordering the same caps that I linked above because it ended up that they were much bigger than the originals and the legs were too thick to fit through the board. After removing the solder I had to carefully widen the holes in the board which was a real pain but I’m happy it actually turns on now! Thanks for the info
^^Forgot to mention that both caps were bulged at the top and the bottom was actually pushed all the way out on one side of one of them and some electrolyte had leaked onto the board and made a mark.
Ive got a samsung le40m87bdx lcd and have the same problem, will be ordering some new capacitors and giving it a go.
Thank you for this site. My TV is a Samsung 466 model. 3 of my capacitors were puffed. My caps were 1000uf, 10v. 105c. I replaced with 1000uf, 16v. 105c.
I was a bit concerned at first because my power supply area, which is located on the left side of the TV looking at it from the rear, did not look like the picture. However, it was easy to tell the puffed caps. Mine were black and grey.
It literally was a 30 minute fix! No experience in de-soldering. Once I used the desoldering braid it was easy to wiggle the caps. I used a hobby knife to straighten the leads, and used a pair of large needle nose pliers, pulled em out, soldered in the new and it works PERFECT
Thanks..you probably save me 500 bucks and a week or 2 of no tv!!
LN 26A450 can be added to the list.
A couple months out of warranty.
Waiting for parts to attempt the fix
Samsung didn’t seem to care when I called all they kept saying was you are out of warranty there is nothing we can do.
How do you open the back panel to find the power supply? Where is it located?
Do you recommend using a higher voltages (my ln46a650 uses 25v and I was thinking about using 30v capacitors.
Thanks
You can add LA40R71BD to the list as well.
I have one three years old. Current symptoms: long start-up time and clicking sound.
Just followed your suggestion….WOW! $16 for 2 new 35V 1000uF 105 degree Capacitors, DeSoder Wrap, Soder Gun and Soder! Check out the YOUTUBE links for sodering tips…since i was a NEVER DONE b4! Done and watchin my lovely ln46a650 Samsung!
I searched quite sometime to find problema AND THEN solution! Just saved me time and know for sure…$$$$$$ Thanks Chriss!!!!!!
@Chriss,
Thank you! When our Samsung TV was broken we felt very upset and we just think how much can cost the reparation but then we saw your post online and even when we never fixed an electronic before we just decided to try this time and yeees!!! Our TV is working and we just spended 20 box. Thank you again Chriss
this set lnt4042h has the clicking syptom taking at least 3 minutes to power up the nwarranty is gone what can be done thank you
we have a Samsung model LNT4032HX4-XAA and it did the same thing clicking while powering up with longer power on times each day, i have now been waiting 5 hours. This sucks, scraped up money to buy this set and we have barely had it a year. The worst part is we had a choice between a 50 inch Sanyo or the 42 in Samsung for the same price; i made my husband buy the Samsung b/c of the brand, i will be eating crow 4ever if we cant fix it. I am hoping your tip also works on ours.
The LN26A330J1D can be added also to the list of problem capacitors. My problem is I am not certain which of the holes get which capacitor. Do you think replacing all five of the capacitors in needed or just the ones that are puffed up and brown on top?
Thanks for posting this, went and bought the two compasitors , soldered them in and now the TV turns on. got two 16volt from the lo0cal electronics store. Your pictures really helped
Hi,
Have a Samsung LN-s4692D and i might have the same problem. it turn on and i still have sound, but the screen is blank. I checked the capacitor already and it not burned or bulged. is there another problem that i’m not aware of???
Replaced mine with higher Volt. TV has been working for weeks flawlessly. Saved a bundle, took 30 minutes total. Samsung will not get any buisness from me ever again.
I changed all the capacitors on my Hps4233x and when i plugged it in, it clicked on and off a few times then kicked on. do you think it needed to charge up the capacitors when plugged in, and that is why it clicked on and off for a few minutes? i just did it right now so its still playing but i had it running yesterday for 3hrs before it turned off. that is why i replaced the last and final caps left on the board. any info would be appreicated. thanks in advance.
Eduardo
Make sure you have not left the wires on the new compasitors to long as they may be shorting out on the metal on the back of the TV.
Mine were and it took me a while to figure it out
This is GREAT, awesome info. Found 32″ Samsung CJ303 LCD in apartment dumpster 2 days ago, found this info yesterday, spent $20 and replaced capacitors today. Works perfect and I never have touched a soldering iron or a circuit board in my life.
Add the LE23R88BD to the list!
Bought mine in May/June 2007 in UK. Just turned itself to stand-by mode whilst I was watching it and now cannot turn it on at all (except to stand-by).
I’ve opened the back and the power supply board including capacitors all looks fine but rather than being ripped off on repair I have ordered a replacement power supply board (saves fiddling about with soldering parts) for £75 through a shop on ebay.
If that doesn’t work then I’m getting a new tele, and rest assured it won’t be a Samsung
You can add model# LN-T4642H to the list, I have to turn the TV on before I’m ready the watch it to avoid listening to the one thousand clicks. When I ready to watch I just turn the cable box on. I got this TV in Nov. 2007
I had the same situation with my Samsung 42′ LCD. The directions given above were perfect, I spent a total of $25.00 for total repairs and 30 minutes of time ( I have never sodered before this experience) TV is now working good as new…no more clicking!
Thank you!
Thanks for the solution. Bought 1000uf 3.5v (couldn’d find 2.5v which was orginal ) removed the faulty capacitor and replaced. It worked. Thanks a lot.BTW I have Samsung LN52A750R1F TV.
Guys! CALL SAMSUNG TODAY. They are finally aware of the issue and are going to cover the costs if it is a capacitor issue. I have the LNT-4665F.
My model: LN40402HX
Same exact problem as the author of this blog post. Followed his instructions practically step by step, with great success so far:
A family member and I (I would reccomend recruiting a partner!) removed the back of the TV (and stand too, if applicable). Immediately noticed capacitors CM811, CM817, and CS806 were bulging. Bought three replacement capacitors that were available cheaply at Radio Shack. One difference with the replacements we bought was that the temperature capacity was a slightly lower 85 degrees (versus the original capacitors which showed 105 degrees). Removed the three bad capacitors and soldered on the replacements. My partner, who had more soldering experience, did the actual replacement, but it seemed very straight-forward. If you watched the youtube tutorial, I’m sure you’ll be fine. As a side note – for the soldering, we managed okay with a 30v soldering iron (versus 40v reccomended in the post).
After that, we tested it, it seemed to work and then put the TV back together, stand back on, etc – and it is working as well as the day I bought it!
Thanks so much to the author of this blog! This was such a great guide and easy to understand noobs like me! Thanks again!
hi chris,
i have the same problem with my 46 in samsung tv.. it made aclicking sound with the red light keeps blingking with no picture on the screen.. i opende my tv and check the capacitor and i cant see any bulging,, so i decided to buy a cheap used power board from ebay.. and when i replaced it, it works for likw 1 minute and the screen went in to color clue and went back to the same problem.no more picture again and red light keeps blingking again.. any advice… please help me
@Marlon – Sometimes it’s really hard to see if the capacitors you’re looking at are bad. Check this post I made on how to spot bad capacitors. Look closely image number 4.
I honestly am so pissed off about this. There are so many people with this same problem. I bought my LNT4066F 40″ Samsung on Black Friday of ’07. It just started with the purple specs/clicking/vertical lines last week and as of Sunday would no longer turn on. My capacitors are waiting for me when I get off work. Instead of 1000uf, 10v, 105C, I am switching to 1000uf, 16v, 105C. I’m hoping this will fix it!!!! THANK YOU
Same issue with the LN40A550P3FXZA. . .Samsung appears to be covering now but will wait to see once techs come by and confirm. . .they are quick to say ONLY capacitors are covered
Sorry to hear the new board didn’t work for you marlon. I got mine from gtvwatford and it seems to have fixed the problem with my TV.
I replaced the whole board as the capacitors (and everything else for that matter) looked fine. If you have installed a new power supply board then its unlikely you still have bad capacitors.
However, mine was different to many of the above posts in that I did not have the flashing standby LED as described by most. My standby was as normal but I was unable to power it up from there.
I suggest you contact Samsung.
I did the capacitor swap out, the Samsung now turns on without clicking. However, the image on the screen (regardless of which input) is barely visible. Has anyone else had this problem???
