Last March of 2008 I was so excited to get my new Samsung LN-T4065F 40 inch LCD TV. The looks of the LCD set is awesome, watching it on High Def is just amazing. But it only took 1 year and 3 months for it to go bad(Yeah after my warranty expired. What a bummer!). The initial problem was when you turn on the device it takes awhile for it to come on. At first, I thought it was my Direct TV DVR that was causing the power up delay because every time when it come on the resolution of my TV goes from 1080i to 480i. But after few weeks the LCD TV gets worst, clicking starts to come in and TV turns on with this weird colored background and I just got tired of it and started searching about it over the internet. After that time, I am for sure of the problem and there’s an abundant of information about it over the internet.
Read about: Symptoms of an LCD Power Supply Problem

Swollen, Bulged, Bad Capacitor
The main cause of this power up problem are bad capacitors on your power supply. The image to your left shows that the middle capacitor is bulged or swollen and that’s how you can identify if the capacitor is bad. See more bad capacitor images Most of the post I have read online haven’t shown a capacitor that has leaked, but obviously that would be another indicator for a bad capacitor.
Now, if your LCD set is still under warranty I would suggest to use it and let the professionals handle the problem for you. But for the rest of the Samsung LCD TV owners that their warranty had expired and want to save some money, this would be the best route. Mind me, when I fixed my power supply I didn’t have any previous experience on desoldering and soldering capacitors on a power supply board. It was a good experience after all is said and done.
Here’s what you need for this DIY project: Screw driver, Soldering iron(40watts+), Desoldering braid, Soldering wire, and capacitors.
Now lets talk about the specs, capacitors hold 3 important value:
1. The capacitance measured in uF(micro farads) (ex. 2200uF), 2. Voltage (ex. 10v), 3. Temperature (ex. 105°C)
Important Notes:
Samsung’s power supply capacitors has 10v installed on the board and it is attached to a 12v bus which is causing to bulged. (I’m not a Electrical Engineer but I do know if you put too much on something, its going to get bigger or burst! ^_^ And that’s why our LCD sets end up with bulged or leaked capacitors)
Look at the bad capacitor and get the right information from it, remember uF, voltage and temperature. Mine, I only change 2 capacitors. It needed two 2200 uF, when I first saw my power supply it was really easy to spot the bad caps. Some Samsung LCD owners did went ahead replace all the capacitors on the power supply to make sure. Now if you’re like me, an inexperience solder, I would not recommend changing all the capacitors because to me it was time consuming for a noob(newbie) like me ^_^.
Few things to take note, always make sure you have the right polarity. Negative part is where the colored stripe on the capacitor. If your looking at the image above, it would be the copper colored stripe. And if you are looking at the two connector wire of the capacitor, the negative wire is the short one. On placing it on the board make sure negative to negative and positive to positive. By this time you will be ready for soldering.
How to Solder and Desolder (Youtube video) is pretty simple and it just need guts to do it
The total cost for this project is $40 (I had to buy a new soldering iron and desoldering braid) You can buy capacitors from radioshack but always remember uF, voltage and temperature(they are price from .40 cents to $5 each).

I just fixed my LCD set last night and all is working fine and turns on normally. Power up delay and the rainbow background is gone . I will update if there’s any other effect after installing that 2 capacitors. This post is based from my own experience fixing my own samsung LCD set.
I will not take any responsibility if something wrong happens to YOUR LCD set after reading and taking this advise from non-professional DIY fixer. USE THIS GUIDE WITH CAUTION!

Fixing Samsung clicking sound on power up
Your Audio Visual Science Forum – Samsung LN-Txx61f/65f/66f

Most of us civilians don’t expect anything electronic to be fixable except by taking it to a shop. But the internet has changed all that. My set had the same clicking problem plus some other things I’ll mention shortly. Replaced some power supply capacitors – including two which were visibly rounded on top – and the set works fine now. Here are the other symptoms I had which are now fixed, so that if you see these problems, they may be power supply related as well. First the sound would come on, but not the picture, though eventually it would. Then there were tiny vertical green lines all over the screen, about 1/4″ apart, plus five or six fixed vertical blue/white lines about 1/4″ across and 3″ tall. Eventually the only symptom was the clicking every 5 seconds or so as the set tried to come on. All was corrected by the capacitor fix. Good luck!
My Samsung LN-T5265F started exhibiting the clicking issue two days ago. Went from 30 seconds to almost 5 minutes before it would power up. I found your post and it saved me big $$$. I paid only $19.99 for two 1000uF 35V capacitors, a 40-watt soldering iron, solder, and braid from Radio Shack. I had never soldered before, but it wasn’t as difficult as I expected. The whole procedure took less than 1 hour. TV works like a champ now! Thanks so much, Chriss!!!
I have the exact same issue with a different model, LA40N81BD
Have Samsung model LNT4065FX, now just two years old. TV comes on with rainbow stripes and clicks on/off. Usually have to manually turn it on/off many times before picture comes on. Also has some random pixelation at times.
Expressed my concern to 1800 Samsung. they were polite, did say they know of a “few” problems posted on the internet but could do nothing else but arrange to have repair service come out at my expense. I am having that done because this is driving us crazy but alos escaltaed complaint to Samsung Executive Claim Handler. He too was cordial but stated that problem does not approach any level of recall and that its out of warranty and basically my problem now. Made it clear that I am not finished with them yet. Dont know how much this is going to cost yet.
So my LNS4051DX failed a week ago, exact same symptoms of taking a while to start up and when started it displayed for a few seconds then went away.
I opened it up and saw that 4 1000uF 10V 105C Capacitors were showing bulged tops. I replaced them with 1000uF 16V 105C capacitors. The TV turns on right away but the display still seems to go off after a few seconds, it feels like its staying on longer than previously though…
What do you guys suggest?
1.Should I buy more capacitors and replace all (maybe except for the very large one)
2.Take it into shop…
The only thing I can think of John is maybe you miss a blown cap. By the way how long you had it running with blown caps?
For at least a few weeks we used the TV with delayed start, until it gave out… I see there are two things beside the bunch of capacitors which have a blue rubber wrapping… they are no capacitors are they?
Very nice post! You have saved a ton of us DIY’s much time and frustration. God Bless you in all that you do. This post shows what a great person you are.
My Samsung just started having the same problem. I bought it less than two years ago. Samsung needs to own up this problem and offer to take care of it out of warranty. If they refuse to do so hopefully someone will take up a class action suit against them. I will try to fix this myself, but will never buy another Samsung again.
@John I am not sure if they are capacitors.
Me and my friend both bought a 4061F about 2 years ago, and both started having the same power up issues within a couple days last week.
I am about to perform the capacitor fix on them, hopefully all goes well.
I WILL NOT buy or recommend another Samsung product not because of the capacitors going bad, lets face it, its electronics and things happen. The main reason is their HORRIFIC customer service.
Nice post. My TV, LN32A330J1D, appears to have a power supply problem as well with different symptoms. On Thanksgiving morning (1 year and 4 months after buyin it) the TV would not turn on at all. One of my capacitors is bulging, which I am assuming is the problem. The RadioShacks here in the Pensacola area do not sell the correct capacitor and I cannot find another place in Pensacola that even sells capacitors. I am stuck to buying it online. I agree with PD that Samsung should own up to this.
I found some specs for a 2200uf 10v capacitor that are going out for alot of people and the lifetime is only 2000 hrs.
Wow, mine is clicking and wont turn on at all. this seemed to happen out of the blue when i came home and it just wouldnt turn on.
A two thousand dollar tv should last more than a year and three months.
Same here…will never buy Samsung again.
Same problem with a 2.5 year old LE40M87BDX, doesn’t power up at all, just clicks constantly. Fortunately I have a 5 year warranty.
Exact same problem, model: LNT4061F
I went to 7 stores the other night trying to find the 2200uf 10v capacitors and finally had to order them online. Currently awaiting delivery.
I wanted a higher voltage, just couldnt find any.
Thanks for posting this. It seems as though my LNT44665F is suffering the clicking symptom. I guess that on the bright side, I’ll be checking any failed electronics I have for bad capacitors now that I know it’s possibly an easy fix.
I have the same problem with Samsung model T4042H LNT4042HX/XAA. I’m comfortable with doing the fix myself, but I’m wondering about changing to a higher voltage capacitor. Is the voltage the problem or just the quality of the factory installed capacitor?
Same problem as everyone else. This is more than an isolated incident and I have stated such in my complaint to Samsung. This will be escalated if it is not resolved free of charge. I encourage others to do the same.
@Lloyd, Others have installed a higher voltage capacitor but I am not sure how it would affect it. When I installed my set I assumed I had a bad quality caps and it just need replacing. Anybody have more information about voltage on caps and how they really work?
Power cycling and crazy pixels problems on a 2-yr old Samsung T4665F LCD TV. Paid $300+ to have repairman switch out capacitors who explained/proved that higher voltage caps would solve problem. Not happy with Samsung after its alleged high quality reputation.
My 18-month old Samsung LN-T4665F LCD TV started delayed power on symptoms several weeks ago, and became progressively worse with time. Longer clicking at stat up and pixelation that required powering off then back on. After reading the experiences of others. After getting a $400 estimate to repair the set, I opened the TV and power supply unit. There I found two bad 2200uF 10V capacitors. I purchased 2000uF 25V capacitors, and viewed several youtube tutorials on soldering and de-soldering circuit boards. I was able to replace the bad capacitors and now the TV powers on like new with no pixelation at all. The soldering equipment and experience may serve me well, because I noted other capacitors in the power supply that may require replacement at a future date.
I will not purchase another Samsung TV, hopefully even product. This is crazy. I have 4 capacitors that popped. The purchaser should never have to replace anything inside this (these) TV’s, and damn well shouldn’t have to pay ANOTHER 300-400 dollars to get it fixed. Just got off the phone, and it was basically, Your screwed. Buy new, pay to get it fixed, or impress your friends with your awesome LCD TV and refuse to turn it on for them. Model number, LN – S4041D. Very unhappy about this, as I paid over 1200 for this TV.
I suggest you guys save the money on the service call and invest in some hands on experience…. Open up the T.V. check the power supply area, find the parts you need, then go to ((partsexpress.com)) and order what you need under their search bar. They have all the cap sizes you need. I ordered 4 top of the line caps (2) 1000uf 50v and (2) 2200uf 50v caps… Total price including S&H was $11.75. Took 3 days to get here and now the L.C.D. is back to normal. No pink dots, no clicking, no lines, no problems!!!
@Bamboozled where did you purchase ur capicitors? link please
@Damn, Bamboozled purchased his capacitors here
Just use the website search function.
I just repaired my TV. It was fairly simple. I replaced all 6 capacitors, only 4 were popped. Problem I have now is, 2 of the capacitors I replaced were 25V. I replaced them with 16V. The rest were all 10V. So I upgraded those for the 12V power board. Am I going to HAVE TO replace those two 16V with 25V? I would never pay anyone 300-400 dollars for this repair. It took roughly an hour, plus the time to get the capacitors. Any info someone can give me on my two lower capacitor voltage’s I put in would be helpful. Thanks.
That cap might give in later, it might take awhile but all is up to you if you wanna wait or replace now.
would just like to say thanks, i have a lg42inch and had the same probs as u guys for the last month or two and have been looking for a bad solder joint not realising about how to spot the blown caps i had 4 3300uF 10v caps bulged and blown, bought a bag of 5 new caps for £5 and 1hr later i am beaming from ear to ear and have been all night thanks again
i have a samsung lnt4042hx/xaa problems powering up
Forgot to update. But replaced 2 capacitors in 10 minutes time. TV powers up perfectly. I will never buy Samsung again for their lack of help or standing by their own product. They told me this is an isolated case. Whatever.
Same problem with a LE40A556. The TV is only 15 months old but Samsung told me that it was my fault as I did not have any surge protection. Interestingly the DVD player, PS3 etc are all fine. Last Samsung product I will ever purchase.
My model #LN-T4669F also has the clicking problem and won’t turn on. I’ve read someone else with the same model has the same problem on the consumeraffairs.com site.
Have a Samsung LN26A450C1DX. Not having power troubles(yet), but picture has a red hue. Use to be able to fix by reset to factory setup. Not working anymore. Has anyone had this problem. Is this fixable by replacing capacitors? Any help is appreciated, Tks
I’ve been having the same problem. It’s a LE40R71. Officially in Holland you have warrenty that sais that if a product does not what you could expect of it, the product must be repaired for free. A 1800 euro TV should not get broken after three years. But Samsung say that they give 2 year warranty, so I have to pay for repairs. I won’t, I let a local TV shop repair it. But I will never buy a samsung again, due to this attitude.
To all who hae posted concerned with going to a hgher voltage or changing to a higer uf capacitor i would advise not to. More than likely this is a filtering capacitor but in the chance that it is actually used in a configuration that is looking for a percentage of capacitance before energizing (most soft start applications used in televisions)this could be bad. I would recommend using hte sma ecapacitance and going no higher in voltage of 16 to 20 volts. in my experience (Bachelors in eletronics 7 years field experience)the voltage does not matter nearly as much as the style of capacitor and capacitance rating.
Anyway’s my Samsung LN-T4671f just started this two days ago. I called Samsung and they will not do anything for me and I tore into it and found the same thing mentioned here. Waiting on my Caps wil post if everything is fixed and if I find anything else.
@Chris: that’s right, uf rating should stay the same.
Should I just replace all the capacitors? Or am I looking for a different capacitor than the power ones? Or Is my problem a totally different matter? Mine just has the red hue at the moment and doesn’t seem to be the same model as the rest. Any info appreciated. Tks
@Raymond: Just check the power supply and make sure the capacitors are not blown or bulged.
Before you all open your LCD Tvs, you should know that the main power supply capacitor can store alot of voltage for some time, so be careful, it won’t kill anyone. As for the problem it self, unlike it was mentioned earliers, the 10 Volts caps are in a 5.3Vols that supplys most of the power used by the main board, the other voltage, 13Volts is used for the sound amp, the tunner and in some cases the T-Com board, as for the ones that give only sound and no picture, that is cause either by a failures in the 1500uF 35V capacitors or in the ballast board.
The caps values may vary acording to the model, but samsung doesn’t put 10v caps in a 13volts bus. I know, I fix them, but here we don’t charge $300 for that plus in europe the warranty is 2 years, by the way, caps fail even without visibel external signs of problems.
So why the caps give up, as far as I’ve seen, and I’ve seen more then all of you togheter, mostly due to power spikes in the ac input or expusure to higher temperatures then the normal ones the device is made for.
my lcd has sound but no picture and I looked at the caps saw nothing could be wrong. Is caps part of my problem as many people have stated. help pls
there are sites stating the tcon is bad is this my problem im going in circles.some dude told me to try to get the tv to turn on after a hundred times of turing it on and off my picture turnedon.I then put the settings to what he said then 2 mins later back to the black screen.Im not a person of money hard to pay my bills as is.
Same problem with a 15 month old Samsung LN-T4069F. Isn’t it time that Samsung be forced to stop selling known faulty products in the US. Write your congressman.
Chris,
Did not feel I was up to changing the capacitors so got a new power supply board for $74 + shipping. Replaced it and same problem – blank screen but still have audio from multiple sources. Strange thing – when I ordered the board 4 days ago they said it would be a 2-3 week wait. Board showed up in 3 days… Any thoughts???
JD
I’m having the same problems with my LN40A550. I just took it apart and have 3 bulging caps. Guess I’m going to make a trip to The Shack.
JD,
I think they gave you the same power supply that came with your TV set which we all know that it has some problems. It is possible also that the caps had blown already after you installed that new caps but you know i’m just guessing.
Can you look at your new power supply and see if there are blown caps?
It should have took some time before it would mess it up but just check it out and see.
Let us know!
Thanks,
Chriss
I am having the same problem with a Samsung LN-4069F (16 months old). I have sent notification of this design defect to Sears, Wal Mart, Sams, Fry’s and Best Buy. I notified them that if they were to continue to carry and sell Samsung TV’s without notifying the consumer they could be liable after being alerted to the problem. I also sent a formal complaint with attachments to the National Consumer Protection Agency, the California Consumer protection agency and the LA Times editorial department. I also sent a submittal to the California Attorney General. I would suggest others speak up and let this problem be known.
Thanks Dennis! As you can see the number of comments about this topic, It is really obvious on what’s going on. Something needs to be done!
I am experiencing the same problem with my LNT-4669F after owning it for a year and a half. Started off taking a minute or 2 to turn on and last attempt was still clicking after 6 hours. Called Samsung and the guy told me I was on my own since it is out of warranty and there are no repair shops in this city. Going to try to repair it myself but this is absolutely ridiculous.
tell us how it goes dave b…. i think i might do the same
