Lately Samsung LCD TV have been having problems with its power supply, caused by bad capacitors. In this post it will show images of bad capacitors so that you can easily identify them once you try opening your LCD TV and try to fix it yourself.

Bulged Capacitors
As you can see on the image, it is very easy to spot a bad capacitor. All there is, is flat and then bulged. The image is showing you the top of the capacitor. Remember not in all cases that the bulging will appear at the top but also bulging can appear at the bottom part of the capacitor where the circuit board and capacitor meets.

Visible Leak On Capacitor
Sometime, bad capacitors does not bulge but if the top of the capacitor is not tightly sealed it could leak. Just like the picture to your left where it leak.
Have you seen capacitor that were blown but don’t have similarities on the images above? Please let me know I will make sure to post is here to inform everybody having this capacitor problems.

I am having similar problems with the clicking and not switching on, watched lots of vids on youtube etc, so eventually bought a soldering iron and oped up the back of the telly but can’t find a single raised capacitor or and black goo coming out of anywhere, have a samsung 42″ ps-42q97hd model and stumped to find the reason it won’t switch on, anyone have any ideas or help with this. called samsung and they refered me to a local company who said it will be £90 call out charge plus parts….
thanks if you can help, am desperate.

Having the same issues as well, there is not a single raised capacitor on the power supply board, all the cacitors are fine.
Looked under the capacitors and still it remains a mistery because theres no leaking acid or bulge.
Appently capacitors can ‘dry up’.

i can’t find the exact same capacitors that are on my tv.The caps on my samsung tv are 1000uf at 10volts and 105 degrees C.The only ones I can find locally are 1000uf at 16 volts and 85 degrees C.Will that difference in temperature work.

Quality electrolytic capacitors typically last 15-20 years, sometimes even longer. I just replaced the filter caps from my 1970′s era guitar amp about 5 yrs ago. You are a victim of Chinese planned obsolescence. Just lookup “bad chinese caps” on the Internet. This is a well-documented phenomenon from almost anything made in China from 1999-2007.

I am one hour post do-it-yourself repair of my Samsung LCD and I have to be honest with you. . . . It is very simple. I have never done any kind of electrical work but was intrigued by all the stories of people fixing it themselves. I replaced four capacitors at .98 each. . . . EACH! Had I owned a sodering iron this repair would have only cost me $4.00. I encourage you all to give it a try. . . you will surprise yourself! Good Luck!

I am having the won’t power up issue with a Samsung 32″ LN32A4 from Circuit City. Less than two years old, won’t power up, flashing red light on the front. Tried to do an online request for service and was sent to a walk in repair shop in New Jersey and I live in CA. Then called customer service was given a tech transaction and transferred to a personal services advocate representative. They said my unit wasn’t covered, I would have to ship it to them and give them a credit card deposit of $125 plus pay for the shipping. I will attempt the repair myself, but very bad customer service and would not recommend buying a Samsung if you are looking to purchase.

Have a Samsung lcd tv model LA46M81BDX. Same problems. TV started by not displaying DTV channels without turn off/turn on power. That worked for a few months. Then tv started to turn itself on at random – day/night. Then finally the clicking relay and no power up. Removed the back cover which was quite easy and exposed power board. Found the two low voltage electrolytic caps (2200uF) had bulged. Cost less than $5 to fix. Average soldering skills needed. Was prepared to toss the tv out at one stage.
